How to add a search bar for your Wix blog
Readers who arrive on one post often want to find another. Here are three ways to let them search your posts, and what to check when search sends them to the wrong place.
Option 1: The blog feed's own search
Wix Blog can show a search tool on your blog feed. In the editor, open Pages & Menu, go to your blog pages and open the Blog page. Click the blog element, open Settings, go to the Display tab and turn on the search toggle. Publish to make the change live.
It's the quickest option, but it sits on the blog feed, so readers have to go to the blog page before they can search.
Option 2: Wix Site Search, set to blog posts
- In the editor, click Add Apps, search for Wix Site Search and add it. Wix puts a search bar in your header and adds a hidden Search Results page.
- Click the Search Results element, open Settings, then the Show on Search tab, and leave on only the result types you want readers to see, such as blog posts.
- Under Reorder you can put blog posts first if you keep other types on.
- Publish and test on the live site.
Wix sets result types on the site's one Search Results page, not per search bar, so the setting applies to every search box on the site. A site with a shop and a blog can't have a shop-only bar and a blog-only bar this way. Wix's steps are in Adding and Setting Up Wix Site Search.
Option 3: A search app such as Findbar
Findbar puts a search bar in your header that suggests matching posts as readers type, grouped with your pages and any products. Pressing Enter opens a full results page.
- Blog search is part of Findbar Pro ($9.99 a month or $99 a year), with a 14-day free trial.
- Each bar has its own settings. You can keep the header bar searching everything and put a second bar on your blog page that finds only blog posts: select the bar, click Settings and tick only Blog posts, or limit it to your blog's part of the site, such as
/blog. - When you publish, edit or delete a post, search usually reflects it shortly afterwards, and a nightly check picks up anything missed.
- Only published posts are indexed. Posts limited to a paid plan stay out of search.
Install it from the Wix App Market, then follow the setup guide to move the bar into your header.
When blog search goes wrong
- Clicking a result opens the homepage instead of the post. Several people have reported this with Wix's search on the Wix Studio forum. A Wix team member replied there that it can happen when the latest version of the blog pages hasn't been indexed. Republish the site, give it some time and test again. If it keeps happening, send Wix support an example search and the post you expected.
- A new post doesn't come up. Check that it's published, not saved as a draft or scheduled, and search again on the live site after a few minutes.
- Blog posts don't appear at all. In Wix Site Search, check that blog posts are turned on under Show on Search. In Findbar, check that Blog posts is ticked under "What to search" in the dashboard, and that the site is on Pro or the trial.
