Wix site search not working? Here's what to check
Products missing from results, pages that never show up, or a search that only opens a pop-up: these are the usual causes and how to fix each one.
When search on a Wix site misses products, finds nothing, or behaves oddly, the cause is usually one of the settings below. Work through them in order: most take a minute to check.
1. The site or page isn't published
Search only covers your published site. If you added products or pages in the editor but haven't clicked Publish since, visitors' searches won't find them. Publish, wait a few minutes, and search again.
2. The page is hidden from search engines
Wix Site Search generally skips pages that are set not to be indexed. Open the page's SEO settings in the editor and check that the page is allowed to appear in search results. This is the most common reason a page "exists" but never shows up in site search.
3. The product is hidden or out of stock
In your Wix Stores dashboard, check that the product is visible in your online store. Hidden products, and in some setups out-of-stock products, don't appear in search results.
4. The content lives in CMS collections or dynamic pages
If your content is stored in the Wix CMS (for example recipes, listings, team members or portfolio items shown on dynamic pages), the built-in site search may not cover it. Wix's usual answer is a custom search built with Velo code, or a third-party search app that indexes CMS collections.
5. Recent changes haven't been picked up yet
Search indexes don't always update the moment you publish. If a product you just added or renamed doesn't appear, give it some time and try again before changing settings. If deleted products keep showing up for a long time, that points to the index being stale rather than a setting on your side.
6. The page is members-only or password-protected
Pages restricted to members or protected by a password are deliberately left out of public search. That's working as intended: visitors shouldn't see private content in results.
7. It "opens a pop-up" instead of showing results under the bar
This isn't a fault. Wix's built-in search bar shows suggestions and results in its own layout, and there's no setting to turn it into an inline dropdown under the bar. If you want suggestions to appear directly beneath the search field as visitors type, you need a different search widget.
Still not working?
- Try in a private browser window to rule out caching.
- Check Wix's status page for an ongoing incident.
- Remove the search bar and add it again, then publish.
- Contact Wix support with an example search term and the item you expected to find.
An alternative: a search that keeps its own index
We built Findbar because of problems like these. Instead of relying on Wix's search index, it reads your products, blog posts, pages and CMS collections through Wix's API and updates its own index when you add, edit or delete something, so changes usually show up shortly afterwards. Results appear in a dropdown right under the bar, and Enter opens a full results page.
Want a search bar that just works? Findbar puts an inline search bar in your Wix header with instant suggestions for products, blog posts, pages and CMS items, and keeps its index up to date as you edit. Free for sites with up to 100 items.
