How to add a product search bar to your Wix store
Two ways to let shoppers search your products from the header, and what to check when a product doesn't come up.
Search for a Wix store usually comes from the Wix Site Search app: Wix's own guide for stores starts by adding it and then setting it up for products. A search app from the App Market is the other route.
Option 1: Wix Site Search, set to products
- In the editor, click Add Apps, search for Wix Site Search and click Add to Site. Wix puts a search box in your header and adds a hidden Search Results page.
- Click the search box, open Settings and change the placeholder to something like "Search products".
- Open Pages & Menu, then Site Menu, and click the Search Results page. Click the results element, open Settings and turn off every result type you don't want, so only Products is left. Here you can also show an Add to Cart button and product filters.
- On the Layout tab, raise the number of results per page so shoppers see more products before they have to click on.
- Publish, then test on the live site, as Wix recommends.
These settings belong to the site's one Search Results page, so turning off pages and blog posts there hides them from every search box on the site. Wix's full steps are in its help article Adding and Optimizing a Search Box for Stores.
Option 2: A search app such as Findbar
Findbar puts a search bar in your header that shows matching products under the bar as shoppers type, each with its image and price. Sale items show the old price crossed out, and the words the shopper typed are in bold. Pressing Enter opens a full results page. On a phone, search opens full screen so the suggestions aren't hidden behind the keyboard.
- Install Findbar from its Wix App Market page and pick your site.
- Move the bar into your header and delete the template's old search box, so shoppers don't see two. The setup guide shows each step.
- To make it a product-only bar, select it in the editor, click Settings and tick only Products under what visitors can find. This works on the free plan.
- Publish. Findbar indexes your shop by itself, usually within a few minutes.
Findbar searches product names and descriptions, and a match in the name ranks higher than one in the description. It doesn't search SKUs or product options. When you add, edit or delete a product, search usually reflects it shortly afterwards, and a nightly check picks up anything missed. The free plan covers up to 500 products and pages. Pro, at $9.99 a month, covers larger shops and adds search insights, including the searches that found nothing.
Products not showing up in search? Check these first
- The site isn't published, or was only just published. Search covers the published site only. New products and newly published sites need a little time to be indexed, so wait a few minutes and search again on the live site.
- The product is hidden. A product that isn't visible in your online store won't appear in search. Check its visibility in your Wix Stores products list.
- Products are switched off in the results settings. If you used Wix Site Search, open the Search Results page settings (step 3 above) and check that Products is turned on.
- The product is hidden from search engines. Wix's way to keep a product out of site search is to hide it from search engines in the product's SEO settings, so a product set that way won't appear. That setting also keeps it out of Google.
- You're over a plan limit. If you use a search app, check what its plan covers. Findbar's free plan covers 500 items, and its dashboard tells you when your site has more.
More general fixes are in Wix site search not working?
Keeping a product out of search
Some shops list products they don't want shoppers to find by search, such as trade-price versions. With Wix Site Search, the documented way is the product's SEO setting above, which also removes it from Google. In Findbar you can add the product's URL under Exclude pages in the dashboard instead, which leaves its SEO settings alone.
Want product suggestions right in your header? Findbar shows products with images and prices as shoppers type, and keeps up with changes to your catalogue. Free for shops with up to 500 items. See it in the Wix App Market.
